The Leo Club of Kota Bharu Central (Sponsored by Lions Club of Kota Bharu) and Leo Club of KL City West (Sponsored by Lions Club of KL West) had successfully organized the 1st Spread Love All Around Youth Leadership Camp at Dusun Eco Resort, Bentong, Pahangfrom December 10-12, 2010 with the theme “Dream Big, Believe in you, dream out of the box.” This camp was participated by 32 participants mainly student ages 13-18 from Montfort Boys Town, Ti-Ratana Welfare Home and also Rumah Keluarga Kami and run by 16 committees.

This camp is specially designed for the population of underprivileged such as orphans, single parents / widows, youth from dysfunctioning family as well as minority ethnic groups. A different way of education was also presented, where we emphasized on experience learning. Debriefing was conducted after every activity to help the participants to see the picture behind the games or activity.

At many times, this group of population will have a faulty assumption that they got something less when comparing to others which is wrong. We are telling them that they are just same as any one of us; they must have the courage to pursue for success, like anyone of us does.

For committees, it is the first time we had close interaction with this population and understand how their life in the institution is. It is definitely important for us to understand them because outsiders will have lots of faulty information about them.

For the participants, camp represents a different kind of escape, an escape from a hard and troubled life, to a world full with hope, laughter and love. We are creating possibility for them to do something different. They had suffered in life, and it is important that we can just show them another part of life through the camp.

This camp activity was voluntarily consulted by Elite Edutainment’s CEO Miss Apel. Dr. Adnan Omar, Head of Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) from Taylor's University had become the main speaker. During this camp, he delivered a talk on Physical, Intimacy, Sex, me, conducted group dynamic activity and also a motivational talk about our theme “Dream Big, Believe in you, dream out of the box.” Besides that, participants are also involved in outdoor activities such as flying fox, obstacle course, bamboo rafting and night walk into the jungle as well as indoor activity such as magic carpet, trust fall and potato game.

The cost of every participant is about RM250.00 and all youth from the 3 institution attended for free of charge through our scholarship program. The organising team wishes to recognise the effort played by Ministry of Youth and Sport through the Deputy Minister YB Gan Peng Sieu for sponsoring us and also District Governor, Dato’ Yeow Wah Chian for supporting our little effort in making small changes within our community. Not forgetting, both sponsoring Lions Club as well as public sponsors and donors.

Fund raising for Down syndrome Centre.

A total sum of RM800.00 was raise through our 3rd Joint Installation Dinner and was donated to Lions Club of Kota Bharu Down Syndrome Centre. The meaning cheque presentation ceremony was done during the installation dinner, and was received by the Down Syndrome Committee, Lion Joe Lee.

Besides giving out the donation, a video about Down Syndrome Centre was created and presented. This had given everyone more information regarding the Down syndrome kids.

The installation of the 40^th President of Leo Club of SMJK Chung Cheng (Leo Hong Jia Yun), and 30^th President of Leo Club of Kota Bharu Central (Leo Tan Sinsing) and their board of director was organised and installed by Lion Sunny Tan – District 308-B1 Region 1 Chairperson. About 180 guests celebrate this installation with us.

The program started by a 10 minute community message video presentation prepared by Leo Lim Meng Zhen, which carry out few important message such as Introduction of Lions Club International, The important of “Go Green”, and others.

All Leaders are given opportunity to give a speech. They are, Organising Chairperson, Leo Tan Ying Lu; Lions President, Indran Subramaniam; Special Guest, Mr. Teo Soon Seng; Outgoing president, Leo Chong Siew Foon; Newly Installed President, Leo Tan Sinsing and Leo Hong Jia Yun, and Guest of Honour, Lion Sunny Tan.

Another video was presented. The video is about the activity for fiscal year 2009-2010. Through this video, we also bring out the message that in 2011, Leo Club of SMJK Chung Cheng (Charted on April 5, 1971) is celebrating 40^th year’s anniversary and Leo Club of Kota Bharu Central (Charted on April 9, 1981) is celebrating 30 years anniversary.

Few part of the ceremony was recorded by the Staff of Lions Club International. Hopefully it will be appear on Lions Club International Documentary.

The Initiation of new members was done by Lion President, Indran Rajalingam. A total of 36 new members were initiated. The Installation of The President and their board of director were conducted by Guest of Honour, Region 1 Chairperson, Lion Sunny Tan.

Few Entertainment program was presented by Leo and non-Leos after all of the ceremony.

黃日升：發掘領導才能
撥1億1550萬訓練青年

共有76名青少年參與「第3屆青少年領袖研討會及生活營」，反應熱烈。

（哥打峇魯15日訊）青年及體育部副部長黃日升指出，在第9大馬計劃下，政府共撥出1億1550萬令吉，作為青年領導培訓發展。

他說，現今的青少年過于注重學術成績，以致忽略了學術與社交兩者的平衡發展。政府瞭解青年是國家未來發展最主要資產，而通過有關領導訓練，可讓青少年有機會發掘本身的領導才能。

他的獻詞是在由哥打峇魯獅子會及哥打峇魯幼獅會聯合，舉辦的“2009年度第3屆青少年領袖研討會及生活營”上演說。上述活動獲76名學員參與。

分享學習新事物

他讚揚上述活動，除了提供青年少互相交流的平台，更讓他們有機會分享及學習新事物，以發掘他們的領導才能。

另一方面，哥打峇魯第一區域主席溫培權說，現今青少年的品格及學識，將會反映出未來社會的方向，因此青少年應多參與有益身心活動，以取得平衡的身心發展。

謝銓來：政局不穩
領導層缺訓練素質

吉蘭丹州政府宣傳官謝銓來說，目前政局不穩及發生各種政治問題，主要是因國內領導層缺乏訓練及素質。

他說，要成為領袖，應有良好的素質及經良好的訓練，尤其需從年輕做起。丹州政府非常重視青少年問題，為減少不良活動，禁止所有不良的娛樂活動，同時鼓勵各組織舉辦有益身心活動。

他昨晚出席“第3屆青少年領袖研討會及生活營”，代表丹州行政議員拿督陳升頓致詞時如是說話。他也代表宣佈撥款2000令吉給上述活動以示支持。

他說，在沒有不良娛樂影響的情況下，可增強學子學習，州內學生的成績也不遜于他州。

活動大會主席蘇巴瑪念則籲請青少年專注學業，勿迫不及待談戀愛。他希望學員把握機會，互相認識、分享及學習等。

Datuk Yeow Wah Chin urges Lions Club members to organise more service projects

SERI KEMBANGAN: The Lions Club International recently celebrated the inauguration of governor of District 308B1, Datuk Yeow Wah Chin, at the Palace of the Golden Horses.The inauguration ceremony was graced by Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and his consort Tunku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

Yeow was elected to lead the district for the fiscal year 2010-2011, which covers Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Federal Territory, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, with a total of 96 clubs and nearly 3,000 members.

Yeow said he was honoured to be elected to carry the Lions torch.

He encouraged all members in their districts to double their efforts and come up with more meaningful service projects that will benefit the needy.

The members have embarked on large scale projects, such as the establishment of The Lions Eye Clinic that provides free cataract operations to the poor.

To date, close to 200 patients have benefited from the clinic, since it started operations in Febuary 2009.

They have also set up facilities for kidney patients. Through the support of the public, the Lions have established eight dialysis centres, which provide services at subsidised rate, and an autistic centre.

Recently, the Lions have set up a Down's Syndrome centre in Kota Baru to serve special children.

IT WAS a proud moment for Datuk Yeow Wah Chin, a Lion’s Club member who was inaugurated as the District 308B1 Malaysia Governor and which was witnessed by royalty, ministers and local corporate leaders at a ceremony at the Palace of the Golden Horses on Saturday.

The Yang DiPertuan Besar Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir graced Yeow’s inauguration ceremony.

Also present were the Tunku Ampuan Besar Negri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Lion Yeow was elected to lead the district for the term 2010-2011 which covers seven states – Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Federal Territory, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan. These states have 96 clubs and close to 3,000 members.

“It is an honour for me to carry the Lion’s torch. My vision is to make the district the best non-governmental organisation in the country and it can be achieved by the collective effort of every member,’’ said Yeow.

He said his vision was consistent with his theme “Together We Serve As One”.

“This is only possible if the members double up their efforts to come up with more meaningful service projects that will benefit the needy within their local communities, regardless of their race, creed and religious belief..

He also reminded the members that the club had been in existence for over 50 years and during that period has provided many services such as campaign on awareness of the environment, promotion of international understanding and youth development programmes.

In recent years, the Lions Club has embarked on large-scale projects such as the setting up of an eye clinic — the Lions Eye Clinic — to provide free cataract operations to the poor and to-date, close to 200 patients have benefited from it since it first started operations in February last year.

The Lions have also set up facilities for kidney patients. Over and above its autistic centre, the club has also with the support of the public, set up eight dialysis centres to provide services at subsidised rates.

And most recently, the Lions set up a Down Syndrome Centre in Kota Baru to serve special children and the artificial limbs project by the club has also benefited 20 recipients whose limbs were amputated due to diabetes.

“As we move along, we must take action to grow more in humanitarian service because more than ever before, there are many people in need and they need the Lions,’’ Yeow said to applause.

He urged the Lions to roar loudly and seize the opportunity to serve the needy.

Tuanku Muhriz in his speech congratulated Yeow on his new appointment and asked his members to work together and progress with time.

“The theme that you have chosen represents an important part of your function as a service-oriented movement because it will promote both your Lions concept of a caring and peaceful society and your ability to bring joy to the needy and the under-privileged,’’ he said.

He said if the club could achieve this objective, it would find an increase in membership.

“Thereafter with strength in numbers, it’s easy to complete whatever projects implemented. I look forward to the formation of more clubs in Negri Sembilan,’’ he added.

Besides the inauguration of Yeow, the event marked the installation of some 100 officers.

The main idea of the IU day is fellowship. There are some games prepared for the participants and DC Lion Alan Thoo is one of the candidates. Quick number of performance was performed to entertain the guest. One of the most interesting parts of the program is song singing by a children age 8. His singing is awesome and gets a great respond from the guest.

By attending this even, we wish to develop further relationship with Leo Club around in Malaysia. We meet quite some new friend and have opportunity to meet DC Alan Thoo for tea break.

The 4th Youth Leadership Conference & Camp 2010

The Lions Club of Kota Bharu and Leo Club of Kota Bharu Central had successfully organized our 4th Youth Leadership Conference & Camp 2010 (YLC2010) at Perdana Resort kota Bharu from March 18-20, 2010. YLC2010 was participated by 102 participants mainly student ages 13-18 from SMJK Chung Cheng and SMJK Chung Hwa.

As usual, the YLC2010 was consulted by Elite Edutainment. Miss Apel and Mr. Nicholas Yeap is the main trainer all the activity. Miss Apel Woo is the chief trainer of The 1st and 2nd National Leadership Camp organized by Majlis Pengetua Sekolah-sekolah Menengah Conforming Malaysia. Mr. Nicholas Yeap was famous as Country Director for “Zeros to Heros” the World 1st Board Game on Entrepreneurship.

Besides that, we are proud to have Dr. Adnan Omar, Head of Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) at Taylor's University College. Dr. Adnan Omar is a social science & suicide expert, been living in the States for around 14 years. Dr. Adnan Omar had reached out to many people: children, teenagers and individuals with different needs and expectations. During this conference, he deliver a Key Note Address on the theme “Generation Y: Betwwen expectation and reality”, Talk on How to Communicate with parents and Physical, Intimacy, Sex, me and you.

Not only that, this year we also got a strong support from the Kelantan State Government in organizing YLC2010. YB Abdul Fatah Mahmood, State Human Development, Youth, Sports and NGO Committee chairman had visited us during Opening Ceremony and officiate the 4th YLC2010 with the sponsorship of RM 5000. YB Dato’ Anuar Tan, ADUN Kota Lama had also given us sponsorship of RM3000. All of this sponsorship is very important in covering the organising and event cost. All of the participants are paying at a very minimum price and the funds from sponsor are use be the benefit of the participants. Overall, we had a very successful YLC2010 this year.

This activity, there are a deaf person, two handicapped and two blind.

So in a team, they would choose 5 ppl to be deaf, handicapped and blind.

AND, during the activity, they are not allowed to loose their hands.

4th YLC! :D

Its tired but I had lots of fun there! :D

This is the 1st time I registered as a committee members. A very nice experience for me :)

but too bad, I missed the Animation presentation day to attend this YLC. Its okay anyway, I just lose the chance to be in newspaper :P got the other time right? haha! xD

After our friend Leo James from Chung Ling High School drown about 2 months ago, now come another sad tragedy where the Leo President of the same school, Jason Ch'ng, 17 found death after the dragon boat tragedy. Al thought we don't know about him, but all of us here wish to express our sadness and deepest Sympathies & Condolences to his family and friends. RIP.

Dear all,

Our friend, Leo James Khor Wan Kai (Leo Club of SMJK Chung Ling, Penang) had passed away on November 1st, 2009. I know him when I was in form 3, year 2004, in National Lead Camp at Dusun Eco Resort Bentong, Pahang. In 2005 and 2007, we meet again at Leo Forum at Penang. Through this few year friendship, we really have a good time. Miss him.

"In my opinion the experience was extremely positive in every aspect; regarding the host families, the people met, the activities and, in general, the whole staying.

I’m asked to underline, in particular, the “negative” aspects, but, I didn’t find any.

The families were really kind and helpful and the time spent “alone” was really short due to the large number of activities.

The camp was funny and the people met are one of the best parts of this experience, too bad that it was just 2 nights long. It would have been very nice to have the chance to go to the beach(however, inside the resort there was a swimming pool). The food, after an initial haziness, was good and very fresh.

The staying in the second city(considered a sort of “countryside”) was extremely funny, also due to the fact that most of activities have been organized with others families, so we always met others YEs almost everyday. Maybe Kuala Lumpur was too big to allow such thing.

I’ve got nothing more to say, except that it was really an amazing experience, that I wish to rejoin in the future!

I think I should underline the great organization of the Kota Bharu Lions Club!

I hope to have the chance to join the Leo Club of my hometown very soon!"

It was a tragedy that 4 wooden houses were burnt down in Raya Eve. All properties of these 4 families were gone in one night. Especially to them who are going to celebrate Hari Raya the next day.

Lion President Lion Yaccob, Leo Advisor – Lion Josh Lim, Lion Kevin Yeap, Lion Benedict Cheang, Lion Chua Yew Beng from Lions Club of Kota Bharu; Leo Jason Lee, Leo Diana Chiok and Leo Sheng Toy Sei from Leo Club of Kota Bharu Central planned to donate some daily utensils, food stuff, old clothing and money to the victims.

It was a meaningful experience for our Leos to be able to interact with the under privilege and show our caring attitude towards the different ethnic. We also realized how lucky we are, to be able to live in a safe homeland.

Pelajar luar negara gembira sertai program pertukaran belia

Sebahagian pelajar luar negara menunjukkan kain batik semasa lawatan mereka ke Kota Bharu, baru-baru ini.

KOTA BHARU 23 Ogos - Menyertai Program Pertukaran Belia Kelab Lions Antarabangsa selama 10 hari bermula 12 Ogos lalu di negeri ini memberi pengalaman menarik kepada lapan pelajar luar negara yang turut serta.

Pelajar berkenaan iaitu lima dari Jepun, dua dari Perancis dan seorang dari Itali ketika ditemui ternyata gembira menyertai program berkenaan.

Kepelbagaian jenis makanan tradisional termasuk buah-buahan dan keindahan alam semula jadi di negeri ini merupakan antara perkara yang paling mencuri tumpuan kumpulan pelajar ini.
Pelajar dari Itali, Alessandra Vella 19, berkata, dia gembira berpeluang melawat Malaysia khususnya Kota Bharu kerana menyifatkannya peluang sekali seumur hidup.

"Saya paling suka ketika menikmati sate yang dimakan dengan kuah sekali. Tidak pernah saya merasa kelazatan makanan ini di tanah air saya.

"Sudah pasti apabila balik nanti saya akan berkongsi pengalaman ini dengan keluarga dan rakan-rakan saya di sana," katanya.

Remaja dari Bandar Acqvi Torme iaitu terletak tujuh jam perjalanan keretapi dari Rome itu juga memberitahu, dia melahirkan penghargaan kerana tinggal bersama keluarga angkat yang membawanya melawat ke tempat menarik seperti Pasar Siti Khadijah dan Pantai Cahaya Bulan.
Vella dan rakan-rakannya tinggal bersama keluarga angkat masing-masing yang terdiri daripada ahli Kelab Lions Kota Bharu.

Kesemua mereka ditemui ketika Majlis Malam Perpisahan di Resort PCB di sini sebelum berlepas ke Kuala Lumpur semalam, dan akan berangkat kembali ke negara masing-masing pada hujung bulan ini.

Rakannya, Capucine Andraud 19, dari Perancis berkata, dia gembira kerana dapat mendaki Gunung Gua Kambing setinggi 1,200 kaki di Machang .

Di situ, katanya, dia berpeluang menikmati alam semula jadi termasuk melihat monyet di tempat asalnya.

"Saya dilahirkan dan membesar di kawasan bandar oleh itu aktiviti mendaki gunung dan rapat dengan flora dan fauna adalah sesuatu yang sangat istimewa bagi saya.
"Saya berjanji pada diri saya suatu hari nanti kalau ada peluang saya pasti akan datang semula ke negara ini mungkin dengan kaum keluarga lain," ujar pelajar dari Kolej Kejuruteraan dan Biologi Industri Paris ini.

Pelajar dari Sekolah Tinggi Kagoshima, Jepun, Nozomi Shiokura 16 pula berkata, dia menyimpan hasrat untuk datang ke negara ini apabila mendapat tahu terdapat pelbagai tarikan pelancongan.

Justeru, katanya, peluang menyertai program pertukaran remaja antara kelab Lions itu membolehkannya melihat industri batik dijalankan di kalangan penduduk di negeri ini.

Katanya, walaupun pertama kali mengunjungi negara ini, tetapi dia dapat merasakan kemesraan penduduk dan dia akan membuat laporan menceritakan pengalaman itu apabila kembali nanti.

KOTA BAHARU, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Kota Bharu Lions Club with cooperation of the Kelantan Islamic and Malay Customs Council (MAIK) will build a RM1.5 million Down's Syndrome centre for children.

Lions Club chairman N Subramaniam said the centre could accommodate more than 100 Down's Syndrome students in the state, including those under the supervision of the State Welfare Department. Speaking to reporters at the ground breaking ceremony for the project in Jalan Merbau here today, he said Lions Club International had given RM270,000 to Kota Bharu Lions Club to build the Down's Syndrome centre.

"We plan to collect donations of RM1 million for the building and equipments," he said.

The ceremony was officiated by the State Exco member for Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Community Unity Datuk Anuar Tan Abdullah. Anuar said the state government had given an initial allocation of RM50,000 to the club for the project while MAIK provided the building site.--BERNAMA

KOTA BHARU, 11 Nov (Hrkh) - Usaha Kelab Lions Kelantan membina pusat kegiatan harian sindrom down turut mendapat kerjasama kerajaan negeri apabila menyalurkan peruntukan sebanyak RM50,000.

Kelab tersebut bercadang membina sebuah bangunan sebagai tempat pelbagai kegiatan sindrom down pada awal tahun hadapan.

Bangunan tersebut bakal mempunyai empat bilik darjah, dewan makan, dua kelas dan studio, bilik mesyuarat, taman permainan, kolam renang terapi, surau, ruang ibu bapa serta kawasan letak kereta.

Pembinaan bangunan membabitkan kos RM1 juta akan dibina di tapak seluas setengah ekar terletak di Lot 61, Seksyen 4, Jalan Kelochor yang diberi Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu Kelantan.

Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pembinaan Bangunan tersebut, Hassan Hussin berkata, kerajaan negeri turut memberi kerjasama dengan menyalurkan peruntukan bagi membina bangunan untuk kegiatan anak-anak sindrom down.

"Keprihatinan kerajaan negeri bertepatan dengan prinsip Kelantan sebagai negeri berkebajikan. Kelab Lions kini dapat mengumpul dana sejumlah RM300,000 hasil sumbangan korporat dan individu yang prihatin," ujar beliau.

Beliau berkata demikian di majlis pelancaran Tabung Pembinaan Bangunan Sindrom Down di Kelab Golf & Desa dekat sini hari ini.

Turut hadir Pengerusi Pusat Sindrom Down Kelab Lions, Subramaniam Niachiappan, wakil Majlis Agama Islam Kelantan, Nik Mohd Noor Nik Ishak dan Pengarah Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Negeri, Mohd Noor Chik.

Hassan berkata, Kelab Lions menyewa sebuah rumah di Taman Rakyat Kubang Kerian sejak 10 tahun lalu bagi menjalankan aktiviti kanak-kanak sindrom down.

Menurutnya Pusat Sindrom Down kelolaan Kelab Lions tidak mengenakan sebarang bayaran kepada ibu bapa yang menghantar anak mereka mendapat latihan di tempat tersebut.

Bagaimanapun kata beliau ibu bapa perlu berada bersama kanak-kanak semasa aktiviti pemulihan dijalankan.

Beliau berkata, pusat tersebut menjalankan aktiviti bermula jam 8 pagi hingga 3 petang yang dibahagikan kepada dua sesi.

Kanak-kanak yang menjalani latihan di pusat harian sindrom down berumur antara 3 hingga 7 tahun. Kebanyakan mereka yang mengikuti pemulihan di situ berpeluang memasuki kelas khas di sekolah rendah kebangsaan.

"Pihak kami juga merancang untuk mengadakan majlis makan malam sambil menderma yang akan diadakan pada masa terdekat," katanya.

Manakala orang ramai yang ingin menderma bagi pembinaan bangunan tersebut boleh menyalur sumbangan ke akaun 755-105146-6, OCBC Bank di atas nama Lions Club Of Kota Bharu.

本报是“2008年第二届青少年领导研討会”的指定媒体。

（吉兰丹‧巴西富地）国际狮子会第308 B1区副总监卡玛拉纳登医生表示，现在是一个充满变数的时代，狮子会会员必须勇於接受挑战，迎接多变的新纪元。

他说，纵观今天世界趋势，每一个地方都在快速的转变，而人们必须面对这个现实。 “单单在美国，民主党的奥巴玛及希拉里在通过爭取成为美国总统候选人的过程中，就带来了改变。不管他们之间谁將成为候选人，他们一定带来大改变。”

卡玛拉纳登受邀为哥打峇鲁狮子会在督峇里海滩主办的“2008年第二届青少年领导研討会”主持开幕礼的时候，这么表示。该项活动由哥打峇鲁狮子会及少狮会联办，卡玛拉纳登也透露，全国目前有84个少狮队，其中64个是在学校內成立起来，会员超过6千人，比普通的狮子会会员还多。他希望狮子会继续在来年支持和赞助少狮会，让青少年领导研討会能一直举办下去。

曾文棋：研討会栽培领袖

较早前，哥打峇鲁狮子会会长曾文棋则说，所谓今天的青年，就是明日的领袖，青少年领导研討会今年迈入第二届，也旨在栽培国家未来的领袖，应付多变的未来。

他希望参加该项活动的学生，从活动学习领导，自我充实，才有条件去接受各种挑战。

林铭正：青年人助国家发展
“2008年第二届青少年领导研討会”青少年筹委会主席林铭正表示，青年人在国家发展的进程中，扮演了重要的角色，希望以后能续办下去。

他感谢来自哥打峇鲁狮子会的叶赐承，以活动筹委会主席的身分，带领他和一班少狮会会员，肩负起举办这项活动的重任，而且，每名参加者原本要缴交150令吉的会费，不过，在获得哥打峇鲁狮子会的赞助之后，每人只需还53令吉。

他也感谢前任青年及体育部副部长拿督廖中莱，在活动开始之前致电给工委会打气。他因此希望参加者珍惜机会，学得更多，才不辜负了赞助人的期望。

研討会获近百人参加

今届的青少年领导研討会获得近百人参加，反应不俗，而且还有来自澳洲及瑞士的学生参加。
出席观礼者有区主任拿督黄罕荣、陈友山、前任会长陈国辉等人。

BEBERAPA ahli Kelab Lions beramah mesra dengan kanak-kanak Sindrom Down semasa melawat ke Pusat Sindrom Down Pasir Hor, Kota Bharu semalam.

DIHARGAI. Seramai 20 orang warga emas dari Rumah Seri Kenangan Pengkalan Chepa di Kelantan diraikan dalam Majlis Makan Tengah Hari sempena sambutan Tahun Baru Cina di Hotel Renaisancce, Kota Bharu semalam.

Mereka diraikan sempena perasmian Pusat Dialisis Kelab Lions Kota Budaya yang beroperasi di Jalan Long Yunus, Taman Koperatif.

Presiden Kelab Lions Kota Budaya, Lim Kooi Sai berkata, pihaknya menganjurkan pelbagai perkhidmatan kepada masyarakat.

Selain meraikan golongan kurang bernasib baik, perkhidmatan sosial juga diberikan melalui pembinaan tempat perhentian bas dan sebagainya.

KOTA BHARU 20 Feb. - Sejak dilahirkan, Zaira (nama samaran) dari Pasir Mas disahkan menghidap sindrom Down, kecacatan genetik yang menyebabkan dia lemah berfikir dan tumbesarannya berbeza dengan rakan seusia.

Dalam usia menginjak 12 tahun, dia masih gagal menguruskan diri sendiri dan situasi tersebut merisaukan kedua-dua orang tuanya yang semakin uzur dan berpendapatan kecil.

Keadaan itu membataskan keupayaan Zaira, kerana tidak dihantar oleh keluarganya ke pusat-pusat penjagaan dan bimbingan bagi kanak-kanak sepertinya yang tergolong dalam kategori orang kurang upaya (OKU) itu.

Sedangkan Athirah, 9, makin bijak menyesuaikan diri dengan persekitaran, boleh berkomunikasi dan membaca dengan baik, malah berupaya bermain piano melalui bimbingan Pusat Kebangsaan Yayasan sindrom Down Kiwanis di Kuala Lumpur.

Dua situasi yang berbeza di atas antara penyebab perlu diwujudkan lebih banyak pusat-pusat penjagaan khas buat golongan ini selain pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK) agar tumpuan penuh dapat diberikan kepada mereka.

Di negeri ini, terdapat 29 buah PDK di bawah Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) yang membuka peluang kepada kanak-kanak OKU termasuk penghidap sindrom Down.

Langkah yang dilakukan kerajaan untuk membantu kanak-kanak kurang bernasib baik itu perlu mendapat sokongan pertubuhan bukan kerajaan (NGO) dan khalayak.

Satu-satunya pusat penjagaan sindrom Down yang diwujudkan oleh NGO di negeri ini, terletak di Pasir Hor melalui usaha Kelab Lions Kota Bharu, sejak 10 tahun lalu.

Pusat ini telah memberi peluang pendidikan kepada lebih 100 kanak-kanak sindrom Down dan mereka lulus pembelajaran Early Intervention Programme dan berjaya meneruskan persekolahan di sekolah rendah kebangsaan.

Dilengkapi pelbagai kemudahan termasuk alat bantu mengajar serta permainan yang membantu tumbesaran, pusat itu memberi pendedahan dan pengetahuan semasa kepada kanak-kanak menguruskan diri serta menguasai kemahiran berkomunikasi.

Menurut Bendahari Kelab Lions Pusat Down Sindrom Kota Bharu, Joe Lee, ketika ini terdapat 22 kanak-kanak ditempatkan di pusat tersebut yang mempunyai dua sesi pembelajaran.

''Sebelah pagi dibuka sejak pukul 9 hingga 12.30 tengah hari dan sebelah petang dari pukul 2 hingga 3.30 petang dari hari Ahad hingga Khamis.

''Pusat ini mempunyai seramai empat orang guru terlatih berkaitan keibubapaan dan penjagaan kanak-kanak sindrom Down untuk memahirkan mereka dengan tugas yang diamanahkan," ujarnya kepada Utusan Malaysia di sini baru-baru ini.

Tambahnya, pusat itu ditubuhkan hasil sumbangan orang ramai menerusi pelbagai aktiviti kelab yang menganjurkan program-program bagi mengisi tabung kebajikan termasuk mengadakan majlis makan malam.

''Kelab turut menganjurkan pertandingan golf, jualan kupon serta mendapat sumbangan secara tetap RM100 setahun daripada 150 penderma dari seluruh negara.

''Melalui sumbangan, kelab akan mengagih-agihkan untuk bayaran sewa bulanan dan menggerakkan aktiviti di pusat tersebut namun tidak ada yuran atau bayaran yang dikenakan. Semuanya percuma," katanya.

Bagaimanapun menurut Joe Lee, selepas 10 tahun menyewa premis yang ada sekarang, kelab berusaha untuk mempunyai bangunan sendiri bagi memberi peluang lebih ramai kanak-kanak sindrom Down mendapat manfaat.

''Bagi menampung jumlah kanak-kanak yang semakin bertambah di samping menyediakan prasarana yang lebih selesa, kelab dalam perancangan membina sebuah pusat yang baru di Jalan Merbau, Kota Bharu.

''Tanah berkeluasan 23,000 kaki persegi itu akan memperuntukkan 5,500 kaki persegi untuk membina dua tingkat bangunan yang lebih selesa dan mampu memuatkan 30 kanak-kanak pada satu masa.

''Kelab menjunjung kasih kepada Sultan dan Permaisuri Kelantan atas perkenan baginda mengurniakan tanah tersebut melalui Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Melayu Kelantan bagi membolehkan bangunan pusat sindrom Down yang baru dibangunkan," ujarnya.

Tambahnya, peruntukan RM1 juta diperlukan untuk membina bangunan yang dilengkapi pelbagai kemudahan termasuk kolam renang, taman permainan serta kelas-kelas pelajar menjalankan aktiviti harian.

''Buat masa ini, katanya, menerusi pelbagai aktiviti yang dianjurkan, pihak kelab berjaya mengumpul RM400,000 dan apabila jumlah mencecah RM500,000, kerja-kerja pembinaan akan dimulakan dan dijangka siap pada penghujung tahun ini," katanya.

''Kelab masih menunggu sumbangan orang ramai serta badan-badan korporat untuk merealisasikan hasrat menubuhkan pusat tersebut kerana projek tersebut dijangka siap pada penghujung tahun ini," ujarnya.
